Competitive Sand Stacking

Dave Burnett sets the first recorded Highest Stack World Record at 20 cubes.

Competitive Sand Stacking comes in a variety of flavors, each one with its own peculiarities.

For most players, the Holy Grail is the Highest Stack record. Simple and undeniable, “stacking the highest stack” is very straight forward, but perhaps one of the hardest to be the best at. At the highest levels, even breathing wrong can send everything tumbling.

Next up is the Fastest Stack record. You’re gonna have to use your fast-twitch muscles for this one, as the quickest to stack 5 cubes gets this record. You can also try for more cubes (10), but that’s an alternate record which will not be kept here.

Finally, you can try to stack the most as fast as you can for the Timed Stack record. You have 30 seconds to stack as many as you can. This one is the middle child between speed and precision, as you’ll need both to be successful.

  • Control your breathing: there’s a reason sand stacking can also be a meditative practice - steady breathing is a pathway to a steady hand and clear concentration. Even with faster records, good breathing can get you far.

  • Understand the center of gravity: technically, you can adjust every cube you place to your heart’s content, but you won’t be able to always have all the time in the world (with Fastest Stack especially); even in Highest Stack, adjusting cubes is very dangerous in the tallest towers. But if you respect and build around the center of gravity, you can compensate for misplaced cubes and keep your run alive.

Although the meta can always shift (and no doubt this page will update accordingly), there are several strategies which have already emerged as effective.

  • Use a bracing hand: although helpful at lower heights, this technique really helps steady your tweezer hand at towers of 10+ cubes. Simply use your non-tweezer hand as a base from which to operate (see the picture at top for an example).
